Walgreens, the nation’s
largest drugstore chain,
is currently ranked
Number 38 on the Fortune 500
List,
and with 7,000 stores planned by
the
year 2010, is on the verge of
the most
spectacular growth in its
history.
Walgreens Distribution
Centers
strive to
find the newest, most efficient and
innovative ways to move
merchandise from
suppliers to the Distribution
Center (DCs) and
then to store shelves. Walgreens
DCs have developed a
reputation for doing just that!
TTS supports Walgreens
Distribution Centers on the
following projects:
Maintenance Organization
Improvement Initiative
Supporting Walgreens three
maintenance performance
improvement initiatives, company
wide, in their DCs. The three company wide
initiatives are:
-
Implementation of a Job
Progression Program for
maintenance technicians.
-
Establishment and monitoring
of Key Performance
Indicators for maintenance.
-
Review
and enhancement of their
Computerized Maintenance
Management System (CMMS).
To
support these initiatives TTS
performed the following:
-
Developed a 3-tiered
maintenance organization
from a flat organization to
provide incentive for the
maintenance workforce.
-
Developed Key Performance
Indicators (KPIs) using a
modified balanced scorecard
approach. The resultant
KPIs are set to two levels,
the DC
Level and the Corporate
Reporting Level.
-
Customized an existing CMMS
package for specific
DC needs.
TTS
currently provides professional
coaching for Distribution Center
Engineering and Management to
help integrate the changes that
are taking place through the new
Job Progression Program, the KPIs and the enhanced CMMS
system.
Job Progression Program
Validated job descriptions for a
new three tiered program through
observation, interviews, and
questionnaires. This provided a
detailed job analysis.
Developed Tests from the new job
analysis. Tests were
administered to the incumbent
maintenance technicians to
determine placement of
candidates and identify training
needs.
The
maintenance technician testing
and evaluation program was
administered at Walgreens DCs
around the country. TTS’ experience with Walgreens and
with testing and evaluation
services made the project
efficient, accurate, and cost
effective. The Walgreens
testing and evaluation program
consists of four parts:
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
An
evaluation of the performance of
an organization requires
comparison to a standard. This
standard is identified by a
specific set of Key Performance
Indicators (KPIs). TTS worked
with Walgreens Corporate to
develop KPIs for the
distribution center maintenance
organizations. The KPIs were
integrated into the CMMS program
to provide monthly reports of
performance. This allows
tracking of performance from an
overview level comparison of
distribution centers and
trending of each maintenance
organization performance.
CMMS Support
-
Standardized use of existing
CMMS program corporate wide
to support key performance
indicators. Trained all
personnel on the proper use
of the system and
maintenance procedures.
-
Developed reporting
structure to generate KPI
reports.
-
Assisted in upgrading of
computer network systems to
increase efficiency of
CMMS.
-
Coordinated purchasing of
CMMS software to standardize
throughout Walgreen Company.
